Pilot-induced vibrations can occur when the pilot approaches at extreme airspeeds. Retracting the flare yoke will increase the aircraft's altitude. Just looking at the sky, the pilot pushes the yoke forward and points the plane towards the ground. The cycle starts again when the pilot pulls back the yoke. This pilot is incompatible with the aircraft as the vibration intensifies rather than helps to subside.

If adding 5 knots is a good idea, maybe 10 knots would be better. Pulling the yoke back on the flame creates a widening effect due to the extra velocity.

Now with a high pitch attitude and reduced speed, the pilot simply pushes the yoke forward and looks at the nearby ground. Touching the plane or nose first causes the plane to bounce back into the air. The push and pull continues as the vibration worsens until the front wheel first hits the ground and collapses.

These accidents do not usually involve fatalities, but they can have devastating effects on the aircraft and injure the pilot's pride. Let's analyze aircraft longitudinal vibration and discuss solutions not easily found in training manuals. Better yet, learn how to avoid it in the first place.

When an aircraft in flight is disturbed by strong winds or misuse of controls, it often experiences a superposition of two pitching motions called phugoids and short swings. Since these two oscillations are essentially independent, they can be analyzed separately.

Fugoid oscillations are characterized by a constant angle of attack and varying airspeed and altitude. After trimming the plane for cruise configuration on my Cessna 152, I calculated the time it would take for the plane to return to its equilibrium position, about 24 seconds after completing a cycle. For this reason, they are also called prolonged oscillations. FAA Part 23 certification requirements do not require this swing to be stable, but the instability should not be a distraction or beyond the ability of the average pilot to help the airplane return to stability. With a well-defined horizon, pilots can do this without much difficulty. In instrument conditions, however, this would be a tall order, as many general aviation aircraft feature a constant phugoid despite slight damping. Consider that an aircraft with stable fugoid oscillations is characterized by airspeed stability.

Transient vibrations include changes in constant airspeed and angle of attack and should be stable for aircraft certified under Part 23. On my Cessna, the duration of this swing is so damped that it's easy to overlook the swing altogether. Flying an aircraft with unstable oscillations is similar to hovering over a basketball, and ice buildup during flight can cause unstable oscillations. Treat short-term stability as angle-of-attack balance (see "Angle balance" sidebar).

Back to the pilot landing in inclement weather. Using a faster approach speed than necessary will require more time and distance to land. And if you pull the flare back too much, it will start the swelling process. If the accompanying fugoid oscillations are constant, the aircraft will tend to return to unassisted trim. Therefore, a nervous pilot moving forward will likely exacerbate the swing rather than help it subside.
